When interpreting cognitive screening results, connect the score to what the person actually does in daily life. A number by itself doesn’t tell you how cognition affects everyday tasks like managing medications, finances, meal prep, or safety at home. Integrating the score with occupational performance means looking at how the person performs real tasks, in their usual environment, with their routines, supports, and goals in mind. This approach helps you plan meaningful interventions—such as memory strategies, task simplification, or environmental modifications—that are tailored to the person’s cognitive profile and everyday needs.

Normative data and age norms are useful for understanding where a score falls relative to peers, but they don’t by themselves reveal functional impact or guide treatment. Relying on age alone ignores how individual abilities, contexts, and goals shape daily performance. Similarly, using only the test score misses how the person actually functions in real tasks, and focusing on the score alone can misrepresent what’s happening in daily life.
